How the word counter works
Word and character counts
Words are counted as whitespace-separated tokens containing letters or numbers. Character counts include spaces and line breaks, while the count without spaces excludes all whitespace.
Sentences and paragraphs
Sentence counts are estimated from sentence-ending punctuation. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. These practical rules may differ from specialized linguistic or publishing tools.
Estimated reading time
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute and rounded up to a whole minute for non-empty text. Actual reading speed varies by reader and content.
